The abundance of rain in recent weeks has led to saturated soils, damaging the turfgrass root systems in many low lying areas. These areas will be more susceptible to damage and more readily show stress for the rest of the summer. Since the putting greens and tees are well-drained, the impact to these areas will be minimal. Golf course maintenance staff members will use traffic control measures to carefully route traffic around these areas in the fairways and rough. Additional care will be given to these sensitive areas in order to nurture them through the remainder of the summer.
When scheduling irrigation, many factors are taken into consideration. Each day, I review four forecasts from reputable weather services taking into account the forecasted temperature, solar radiation, humidity, dew point, and wind. This information, coupled with current turfgrass conditions and soil moisture levels, is used to determine the required amount of water. Our computerized irrigation system allows us to customize the amount of water that we apply to each individual green, tee, fairway, and rough area. Even with that information, properly scheduling irrigation can be difficult. Last night, for example, the course was showing moderate drought stress and in need of water. The forecast for today was cool, but low humidity. Without returning water to the turf plants, they would begin to decline and likely be in rough shape for the weekend. Most importantly, there was between a zero and twenty percent chance of precipitation today, all of which was light rain showers at most. Apparently that must have changed. When I woke up this morning, a moderate rain was falling. A strange blob of moderate rain about thirty miles wide was in the process of moving south down the Lake Michigan coast line. Even though only a light irrigation was scheduled, the addition of the moderate rain will soften the course more than anticipated.
The golf course has received almost seven inches of rain within the
last week. As most of you realize, this
is a very bad scenario for a relatively flat, poorly drained golf course that
is built on heavy clay soil. While the recent
drainage additions and fairway sand topdressing has improved the course’s
ability to handle rain events, the current weather pattern is simply providing
too much rain for the course to handle.

have made rough mowing impossible for the last week. Our wide area rough mowers are

simply too
heavy to mow in these conditions without creating ruts in the rough and getting
stuck. Staff utilized small push mowers
(21” wide) to mow around all greens on Monday and lightweight 52” commercial
mowers to mow around all fairway bunker complexes and tee banks. Once last night’s rainfall soaks in, we will
utilize these commercial mowers to mow a 30-35 foot wide swath around fairways—the
area where the rough is thickest. I
personally attempted to begin the process this morning, but it was too wet. This is our best option until the course
dries sufficiently to accommodate the larger rough mowers
and tees were preventatively treated with a combination of fungicides on June
16th. th. Additionally, the
subsurface drainage in the greens and the elevated nature of the tees allows
for quicker drying time and less opportunity for disease. The wet conditions and standing water has
proven to be a problem for applying fungicides to fairways. We intended to treat all fairways yesterday,
but were unable to due to the rain. We
plan on treating all fairways today, following junior play, unless it rains
again. This treatment will provide two
weeks of coverage. Since certain areas
of fairways are untreatable due to standing water, staff will outline these
areas with blue turf paint so they can be treated as soon as they dry or the
water can be removed. We are currently
seeing some disease development. The
pathogen, dollar spot, thrives under our current conditions. While visible, if treated quickly, will not
significantly damage the turf. In fact,
the turf will likely grow through the infected areas within a week. If left untreated, the effect can be more
severe. Should temperatures increase,
the range of diseases increases, as does the severity.

These products will
provide 14 days of control. This will
provide sufficient coverage until our next schedule application on Monday, June

Putting Green
Quality/Performance:

Putting green health remains strong.
The subsurface drainage has allowed the greens to remain playable and
relatively firm given the wet weather.
During times of stress, such as our current wet period, the goal of
putting green management becomes preserving the health of the greens rather
than pushing ball roll speeds. Since
mowing and excessive rolling under wet conditions can cause scalping and turf
loss, management will remain conservative until the weather breaks. Once normal weather patterns return, staff
will intensify maintenance practices to improve performance. The combination of an abundance of both
Monday outings and rainy days has made critical practices such as vertical
mowing and sand applications difficult.
My goal is to “vent”, topdress, and spray the greens on Monday. This will improve gas exchange within the
soil, firm up the putting surfaces, and protect them from turf diseases.

To date, the course has handled the wet weather well. Relatively cool temperatures have been the

increase. As stated earlier the quantity
and severity of turf pathogens dramatically increase, as does the potential for
turf loss in areas where standing water remains. We are not the only club dealing with this
situation, every club in the area is facing the same challenges.

The cold and wet weather continued this week, frustrating both golfers and maintenance team members alike. After nearly six months of winter weather, residents of southeastern Wisconsin and its turgrass could use some warmer temperatures. Fortunately, the course did survive the winter with only very isolated patches of damaged turf, unlike courses throughout many other parts of the country. Even though the weather has been less than ideal, the maintenance staff has been busy preparing the course for the golf season. While course access has been limited to walking due to continued wet conditions, we have utilized our time to prepare other areas of the course so that we can dedicate our entire team to course conditioning practices and mowing once we finally dry out.

The White Nine putting greens were aerified on May 5th. Unfortunately the cold day and night temperatures have hampered their recovery. It is unlikely that the greens will completely recover by its reopening on Memorial Day Weekend. Should this be the case, the pro shop will route the 18 hole golf course from the Red Nine to the Blue Nine, leaving the White Nine as the "family" nine until the aerification holes have completely filled in.

Blue Nine Bathroom Water Suppply

As many members have noted, the course bathrooms on the Blue Nine have not yet opened for the season. Upon pressurizing the water supply to the bathroom, a leak was discovered. Since we had no drawings from the initial construction and well installation, golf course staff was tasked to excavate the site to determine the cause of the leak. After an extensive investigation, we determined the cause of the leak was an old buried air tank. A new tank has been purchased and installed, and the water supply has been reconnected. The bathrooms are now again in working order. Staff will repair the work site next week. Hats of to Bob and Ricky for their hard work on this project.

Since course access has been limited, staff has continued knocking off punch list items in preparation for Memorial Day. All bunkers on the Red and Blue Nines were edged. The White Nine bunkers will be edged next week. The seeded stump holes have finally germinated, in large part due to the insulating covers. We will remove the covers and hand mow all forty-five of these areas in the coming week. While we will apply a broadleaf herbicide to the entire rough next week, we were able to sneak out and treat all bunker edges with a combination of post and preemergent control. It is no secret to most homeowners that the past winter was very hard on most evergreen trees and shrubs. Due to the extensive damage, many plants at the club's main entrance were replaced under the guidance of staff horticulturist Susie Jushka.
Be prepared for a soggy golf course and thick rough this weekend. Due to the saturated soil, we have been unable to send out our mowers to cut the rough. Should conditions allow, we will begin mowing the rough over the weekend.Garrett Luckhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03797830358961028803noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6364115290697923549.post-48487495852026082942014-04-09T06:52:00.002-07:002014-04-09T06:53:38.593-07:002014 Course Opening and Conditions

Over the extremely cold winter, over two feet of ice formed on the pond. The thick layer of ice placed more pressure than normal on the stand pipe that serves as an outflow and drain for the pond. The pressure of the ice actually damaged the valve at the bottom of the pond. Next week, we will repair the valve and fill the pond once again. Please refrain from walking on the exposed edges of the pond. Not only is it dangerous, it could also damage the pond.

Lastly, I wanted pass along a photo from the sixth fairway on Red Nine. You will notice the brown circles of turf leading up the through the middle of the fairway. At first glance I thought that it was disease. Upon closer inspection the damage was caused from snowshoes walking the course over the winter. Even though we had ample snowfall, the compressed snow turned to ice, causing the damage. This picture truly shows how fragile turf is, even in the winter months. The damage is superficial and the turf will quickly recover with the onset of warmer temperatures.
The warmer temperatures over the last few weeks have provided us an opportunity to finally view turf conditions below what had been a thick blanket of snow. While I was confident that the turf was well insulated and protected from the cold weather, I was pleased to see that my prediction was accurate and the golf course putting surfaces have handled the winter well and are in great condition. Avoiding any freeze/thaw cycles and winter rain certainly played a key roll in the turf's condition, as ice formation was minimal over the winter. In past years when we have seen significant winter damage, major ice accumulation had occurred and remained for an extended period of time.
Over the last few days I have walked the entire course and viewed each green. While a couple of greens still remain snow covered. The majority are clear of snow and appear very healthy. As seen from the clubhouse, the putting surfaces appear unnaturally green compared to their surroundings. This green color is not due to any photosynthetic activity, rather the dark coloration is due to the pigments that were applied in conjunction with our late fall plant protectants. These products provide protection against cold weather fungi, which if left untreated, can be devastating to the turf over the winter. Even though these snow molds are clearly visible in home lawns throughout the area and untreated rough on the course, the preventative products applied last fall have kept all greens, tees, and fairways free from these pathogens. We will likely make follow-up applications of dark pigments over the course of the spring to foster growth. The dark color of the pigment will allow for greater absorption of solar radiation, leading to an earlier green-up and leaf growth.

8 White Right Side

Even though most turf appeared very healthy, there were a few areas of concern. One example is pictured on the right. The right side of 8 White green appears mottled. The light brown patches are annual bluegrass, Poa annua. Poa is much less hardy than its more desirable counterpart, creeping bentgrass. Due to its questionable appearance, samples were taken from this green and brought indoors for further examination. After watering and warmth, all turf on the sample responded by growing and turning green. Based on this sample, I anticipate the brown patches of turf to be mostly superficial. With the onset of warmer temperatures and a resumption of maintenance practices, I expect the putting surfaces to quickly outgrow any imperfections.
Turf's Great Blanket Offers Protection From Polar VortexThe recent frigid temperatures and bone-chilling winds have made the words "polar vortex" as common place as "apple pie" throughout almost the entire United States. While temperatures below -25 degrees F and wind chills more than twice as cold can wreak havoc on cars and prove deadly for humans, they also can be extremely damaging for turfgrass. The cells within certain varieties of golf course turf may even rupture due to freezing when temperatures fall to such dangerous lows. Fortunately, the vast majority of turf at NSCC has been insulated with a thick blanket of snow since early December. Even though monitoring turf conditions below the snow cover is not possible, our in-ground moisture meters give us an inclination of what is happening to the turf. Not only do our moisture meters measure moisture levels, they also measure soil temperatures. The graph below depicts soil temperatures since January 1. Each line on the graph represents one individual green:

The top yellow line is the 7 White green

The second orange line is practice green

The third yellow line is 2 White green

The bottom brown line is 1 White green.

As you can see, the top three lines represent the three greens with the heaviest snow cover. This snow cover acts as a blanket, offering the turf sufficient insulation. Notice that there is only a minor drop in soil temperatures over the period of extreme cold that we have just encountered.

The bottom line represents 1 White green. While covered in snow, the elevated and open nature of the green allows for more wind and blowing snow minimizing the extend of insulation. Because of this reduced level of insulation, the soil temperatures rise and fall more frequently. Even taking these temperature fluctuations into account, the turf on 1 White green is still very healthy as there has been sufficient insulation to prevent any severe damage at this point.

Over the course of the winter, members often ask how the course is doing. I feel strongly that a heavy snow cover is the turf's best insulator and protector. The use of soil technology provides a graphic which explains why this is true.

In addition to removing leaves and preparing the course for the winter, the golf course maintenance staff has been busy completing other punch list projects before the ground freezes. One such project was root pruning all trees located within ten yards from the perimeter of the fairways. While time consuming, the benefits of this process will be realized next summer with healthier fairway turf, more consistent fairway moisture, and a reduction in labor intensive hand watering. By use of the vibratory plow attachment on our trencher, we were able to sever all roots to a depth of ten inches. As witnessed by the photo above, these fibrous roots wreak havoc on the turf during the stressful summer months as they are able to outcompete the turfgrass for moisture. It will take about two years before the roots regenerate and this process must be completed again.
As many of you have surelynoticed, the integrity of the pond edge had declined over the last few years, exposing the irrigation piping and posing a safety issue to both members andemployees. In order to repair theroughly three hundred feet of pond bank, the talented members of the maintenancestaff utilized an excavator to reshape and soften the edge. At the same time the pond edge was beingprepared, other staff members worked to further improve the hole. The narrow point of the fairway was expandedby roughly three yards to disperse cart traffic and improve playability. Additionally, the beach bunker on the greenside of the pond was removed according to the Forse plan. The elimination of this bunker will easemaintenance associated with sand washing into the pond and improve playabilityby eliminating a long bunker shot for those who have punched out through thefairway and into the bunker. Prior toregrassing the edge of the pond, the entire edge was lined with wire mesh toprevent muskrat damage and plastic mesh to reduce future erosion. The entire project was completed in-house bythe golf course maintenance staff and serves to improve the hole for futureyears.

NSCC's fairway topdressing program is a critical piece to the overall management of our fairway turf. The program began in 2008 and was discontinued from 2009-2011 during the economic downturn for budgetary reasons. The application of sand, when partnered with solid-tine aerification and aggressive vertical mowing, will greatly improve the playability of the fairways. While the traditionally used core aerifcation allowed us to manage the thatch level of the fairways and alleviate compaction, it did nothing to improve soil conditions.

Since NSCC rests on poorly drained, heavy clay soils, managing turfgrass moisture is very challenging. As most members can attest, the fairways are very soft when wet allowing for minimal ball roll and increased disease pressure. When the fairways become dry, they have the consistency of a terracotta pot. Managing a high quality playing surface under these extremes can be nearly possible at times.

Fairway topdressing allows us to modify the underlying soil profile through the introduction of sand. As the sand accumulates over the years, the fairways will become increasingly firm with improved drainage. Golfers will easily recognize the improved ball roll, consistent lies, and increased cart usage following rain events. The reduction of thatch and improved drainage will reduce disease pressure, allow us to better manage moisture, and provide a higher quality playing surface to the membership.

Consistency and patience are the key to a successful fairway topdressing program. In its first full year, the program has accumulated over .25" of sand on all the fairways. At this rate, the fairways will be growing on two inches of sand in seven more years. Due to the duration of time needed to reach this goal, most golfers will not notice an immediate change, but each year the playability of the fairways will continue to improve.

The snow has finally melted and the rains have finally subsided--at least temporarily. An unusually long winter has taken hold of the Upper Midwest. Masters weekend, the unofficial start of the golf season, is upon us. Unfortunately, we remain locked in a miserable weather pattern. Due to the lack of sun and warm temperatures, the golf course remains locked in a winter-like state. In fact, soil temperatures have yet to reach 35 degrees Fahrenheit on the golf course.

It goes without saying that the lack of spring weather has delayed the opening of the golf course, especially in contrast to the extremely early opening of 2012, but how much longer do we have to wait? Rest assured that the golf course maintenance staff monitors conditions on daily basis. Each year we keep what is in the best interest of the golf course turfgrass in mind when determining when it is appropriate to open. It appears that the over five inches of rain that we received this past week has ushered the frost from the ground, clearing another necessary hurdle prior to opening. Conversely the abundance of rain has also left the course in a very soggy and fragile state.

We typically like to see the turfgrass plants actively growing prior to opening so that they are able to withstand the damage that occurs due to the traffic of daily play. Usually this means that we have mowed the putting surfaces at least one time. Since the frost has just left the ground, soil temperatures will now more easily increase with the onset of some sunny days.

The golf course maintenance staff is ready and excited to open the course for the 2013 golf season. As usual we will open the course when we are certain that walking traffic will not have a detrimental affect on the turf. Given the upcoming forecast, more cold and wet weather, I believe that it is unlikely that we open prior to next weekend (4/20). Should conditions allow, we are prepared to open earlier. Unfortunately, another week of cold and dreary may delay opening even further. We appreciate your understanding and patience in this manner and look forward to providing you with a wonderfully conditioned course in the upcoming year.Garrett Luckhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03797830358961028803noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6364115290697923549.post-7475438316266078642013-02-26T11:03:00.001-08:002013-02-26T11:03:26.177-08:00NSCC Recognized In National Publication

Moisture meters have become a true asset to managing the turfgrass at NSCC, a fact that I have referenced in past blog posts. The most recent issue of Golf Course Industry magazine highlights the benefits of using moisture meters at various courses. I had the opportunity to speak with the author of the article and he has included a number of quotes which speak to the importance of the use of these tools. Click here to read the article.Garrett Luckhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03797830358961028803noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6364115290697923549.post-64522312521808639852013-01-31T09:15:00.001-08:002013-01-31T09:15:54.278-08:00The Potential Impact From 60 Degrees and Rain In Late January

The best possible scenario for healthy turfgrass in spring is a "normal" winter that includes ample snow cover to insulate the underlying turf. In recent years it seems as though our "normal" winter no longer includes extended periods of snow cover and cold temperatures. In its place we have experienced a wide range of temperature fluctuations and a variety of precipiation, both in terms of type and quantity. What does this new "normal" winter mean for turfgrass at North Shore Country Club.

Any turfgrass manager's greatest fear during the winter months is prolonged ice coverage. While some ice formation is normal, even during our old "normal" winters, heavy rain events followed by extremely cold temperatures provide the greatest opportunity for winter damage. Gas exchange is severely limited underneath thick ice coverage that persists for months on end. Even during the winter months, gas exchange is critical for turfgrass survival. Without proper gas exchange, the turfgrass may suffocate and die. In 2010 this type of ice formation led to severe damage across many fairways at NSCC. Much debate exists within the industry as to whether physically removing ice is beneficial to the turf or if it actually promotes more damage. Since annual bluegrass is more susceptible to damaged from prolonged ice cover, NSCC's golf course maintenance staff takes a very proactive approach to removing ice from the putting surface during the winter.

Fortunately we have endured our current winter without any periods of prolonged ice coverage. Instead we have had extended periods of little or no snow coverage and varying temperatures. Recently we received nearly once inch of rain followed by a rapid decline in temperature. This scenario can often be problematic. When temperatures reach unseasonable highs, the grass plants, annual bluegrass in particular, begin to break their dormancy. Upon breaking dormancy, the turf takes in the available water around it. As temperatures plummet to the single digits, the water may freeze causing damage or death to the turfgrass plants. In order to prevent such damage from occurring, the golf course maintenance staff made every effort to remove as much water as possible from the putting surface and low-lying fairway areas. This practice became more difficult as the rain eventually turned to snow. Five dedicated maintenance staff employees spent the day in the rain, sleet, and snow removing as much water as possible from NSCC's playing surfaces.
NSCC maintenance staff has been busy these last few weeks preparing the course and facilities for the winter. Susie Jushka, staff horticulturist, once again spent a considerable amount of time researching, ordering, and planting spring bulbs around the expansive clubhouse ornamental beds. Much like a child waiting to unwrap a Christmas present, she too must wait until next spring to see the fruits of her labor realized.
The golf course will remain open until frost enters the ground. Once the ground becomes frozen, the greens and tees will be closed to all play. The holes will be cut in the fairways and the tee markers will be moved to the rough in front of the tees. Please check in with the pro shop for updates regarding course status. One of the most critical yet overlooked pieces of the renovation to 8 White is the contour changes to the putting surface. Like most greens at NSCC, the putting surface on 8 White existed as a relatively flat green. While the green featured a small decline to the rear right and left, the majority of the putting surface offered little interest. In designing the plan for the eighth green, Ron Forse, golf course architect, looked to enhance the existing contours by building up and expanding the rear of the green. This new contour allows for more interesting putting, a better view from the tee, and an improved ability for the green to hold lower trajectory golf shots.

Ron Forse was on hand to oversee the changes that would ultimately occur on green. After a long conversation regarding playability and construction methods, Ron carefully painted the area which would be changed.
Once the designated area was ready for the project all sod was removed and carefully stacked so that it could be returned to the same location. A special mix of soil was added to the exposed surface. The soil was tested to verify that it retained physical properties that very closely resemble our existing soil profile. This will eliminate the chance for turf failure at a later date due to the icompatiblity of the two soils.

After compacting the soil mix, the sod was carefully replaced and compacted by using a vibratory plate compactor and roller. Prior to opening next May, the grounds and greens staff will continuously aerify, verticut, and roll the surface to make sure the green rolls as true as the rest of the greens at NSCC.

The renovation project on 8 White is now underway. The golf course construction contractor, Country Golf Inc., arrived on Tuesday. They began preliminary shaping work on the greenside bunkers on #8. Course architect, Ron Forse, had previously sent detailed drawing of the project. Jim Deemer, shaper for Country Golf, began grading the drainage swale and roughing in the bunkers around the greens on the eighth hole. On Wednesday, Ron Forse will arrive to finalize and approve the shaping work, define the bunker edges, lay out the new tee's elevation and shape, and begin preliminary work on 1 White. With dry weather, I hope to have the green complex on 8 White complete by the end of next weekend.

Fall provides Wisconsinites some of the best weather to play golf, a fact that is not lost on the golf course maintenance department at NSCC. Autumns in Wisconsin are typically dry with cooler temperatures and lower humidity. We have tailored our golf course maintenance practices to afford NSCC’s membership with the best golf course conditions possible. While the White Nine will close following Labor Day in order to complete the renovation projects on holes one and eight, the Blue and Red Nines will remain open. As is evidenced below in the aerification schedule, you will be able to enjoy perfect putting surfaces until late October.
After the extended period of extreme drought over the last few months the rain that we received seemed almost surreal. Golf course maintenance staff members beamed with smiles as we received 1.3" of rain over the last twenty-four hours. The first rain of the season created a sense of confusion for first year employees as they were unprepared lacking rain gear and a proper course exit strategy, returning to the maintenance facility completely drenched. For veteran employees, the highly anticipated rain meant a reprieve from weeks of daily hose dragging and hand watering in temperatures that have been consistently above 90 degrees, including 5 days above 100 degrees. The relief to the turfgrass was evidenced by its increasingly green color. The most satisfactory factor of the rain was the fact that the rain event was followed by cloudy skies and two days that will struggle to reach 80 degrees for a high. These cooler temperatures will allow for turf recovery with minimal risk for turf scalding, suffocation, and disease. Happy rain day!Garrett Luckhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03797830358961028803noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6364115290697923549.post-11981213345896194322012-06-27T06:03:00.001-07:002012-06-27T06:04:24.103-07:00Dedication and Perseverence

Portable Sprinkler In Rough On 7 Red

After little snowfall over the past winter, a dry spring, and only .36" inches of rain in June, the golf course remains extremely dry. While our automated irrigation system in normally sufficient in providing adequate moisture to the putting greens, tees, fairways, and selective rough areas, we are limited to irrigating areas that are located near sprinkler heads. During periods of extreme drought, outlying rough areas receive no irrigation through our automated system.

Due to the dry conditions and warmer than normal temperatures, unirrigated portions of the golf course have turned dormant. Dormant turf will recover with the onset of rain and cooler temperatures, however these areas are more susceptible to wear and tear from golf cart traffic and simply provide a less than desireable appearance. Additionally, the trees located in these areas are placed under increased stress due to the lack of water.

In order to assist these areas with recovery, NSCC dedicates one employee to placing portable sprinklers in these areas on a daily basis. Our employee, Miguel, has remained dilligent over the last couple months by nurturing acres of rough through these challenging conditions. Miguel's day consists of hauling around thirty 100' sections of 1" hose and 15 sprinklers around the golf course on a rotating basis. Each morning Miguel begins at 5AM and finishes around 2:30 PM. Without Miguel's dedication, the roughs would be crispy and dormant. The picture below illustrates the importance of the portable sprinklers in the rough. Don't hesitate to acknowledge Miguel's hard work if you see him on the course.

Turfgrass managers use an almost infinite number of tools at their disposal to protect and maintain their putting greens. While aeration, sand topdressing, and properly used fungicides are examples of tools that are recognized by most golfers, less common tools are not as easily observed by golf course patrons. The picture of the 9th putting green on the White Nine provides an example of one such practice. If you look carefully, you will notice that the right half of the green is much darker in appearance than the left side of the green. At the time the photograph was taken, only half of the green had been sprayed. In addition to our usual application of fungicides, growth regulators, fertilizers, and bio stimulants, a turfgrass pigment was also added.

We initially discovered the benefits associated with turf pigments when applying fungicides to fairways in the late fall to prevent snow mold. The particular fungicide that was applied came pre-mixed with a turfgrass pigment. We realized the benefits of the pigment in the early spring of the following year. Due to the darker color of the fairway following the application of the pigment, the fairways greened up much earlier than normal. We believe this occurred due to the warmer canopy temperature afforded by increased solar radiation adsorption due to the darker colored turf. Often times, we will apply pigments early and late in the season to promote turfgrass growth.

Additionally we will apply products containing pigments or add pigments when spraying greens in the summer. In summer time, the pigment acts as a sunscreen, shielding the turf from intense solar radiation. Temporarily following the application, the putting surfaces take on a vibrant green color.Garrett Luckhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03797830358961028803noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6364115290697923549.post-17433616564830001232012-05-14T06:32:00.004-07:002012-05-14T06:32:54.174-07:00Technology and Turf-Moisture Management

Many advances have been made in the turfgrass industry over the last decade that serve to improve turf conditions and operational efficiency. New mowers, aerifiers, and sand delivery units are prominent examples of these type of improvements. Sprayers equipped with GPS systems ensure proper pesticide delivery. More recently, siginificant advances have been made in the area of moisture management. While this topic receives much attention in areas with a limited water supply, such as the Desert Southwest, it also applies to those of us in the Upper Midwest. Even with our close proximity to the abundant resources afforded by the Great Lakes, precise irrigation is both good for the environment and turfgrass alike.

In today's climate of heightened environmental sensitivity, most everyone is aware of the need to preserve the earth's natural resources. An increase in the global population has brought this issue to the forefront of today's environmental issues. Professional turf managers most certainly understand this, but also understand the benefits derived from proper moisture management. Conditions that allow for a proper balance of irrigation over time provide healthy turf and improved playability. Excessive moisture creates an ideal environment for disease development and root loss due to a lack of oxygen in the root zone. Unnecessary water also leads to undesirable playing conditions such as plugged lies and reduced ball roll. Successful golf course superintendents realize the importance of proper moisture management and will currently employ advances in technology to best manage irrigation at their courses. The golf course maintenance staff currently at NSCC currently uses two pieces of technology to monitor soil moisture conditions on the golf course.

Last year, the golf course maintenance staff began using the FieldScout TDR 300 Soil Moisture Meter. This portable meter is carried from green to green by a trained staff member. During the summer month's data is gathered throughout the day. The numbers obtained from the unit are checked against threshold numbers that have been previously established. The threshold numbers identify the minimum water requirement for healthy turf. If the turf falls below the threshold number, nightly irrigation or hand water will be scheduled.

This year, the golf course maintenance staff will begin using a product called Turf Guard which is manufactured by the Toro corporation. Turf Guard is a system of soil moisture meters that communicate with the central irrigation computer. Last week, NSCC staff installed these stationary meters in the greens on 1 White and 7 White, along with the fairway on 1 White. The sensors communicate via radio to receiver in the clubhouse. The receiver then sends information over the internet to the central computer in the Superintendent's office in the maintenance facility. The sensors monitor both soil temperature and moisture. Accurate soil temperature measurements are critical when applying time sensitive herbicide, fungicide, and fertilizer applications. Additionally, the sensors may be left out during the winter to monitor soil temperatures below snow cover. As previously discussed, proper soil moisture management is critical for both healthy turf and improved course playability. These meters provide real-time measurements that are accessible at any time from the central computer at NSCC, as well as remotely from my iPhone and iPad. If the Turf Guard sensors prove valuable, we will have the opportunity to expand to other locations through the golf course in the future.

Prior to 2008, fairway maintenance at NSCC had centered on core aerification which occurred on an annual basis. This process was beneficial to the turf at NSCC as it alleviated soil compaction, reduced thatch and allowed for proper water, oxygen, and nutrient exchange, but was often completed to the dismay of golfers due to the often muddy conditions for two to three weeks following the process.

At about the same time as this process began, the economy suffered and club membership trended downward. Tough decisions were made to reduce expenses throughout the club. The expense of the sand proved to be too much and became a casualty as well. The golf course maintenance staff has continued to aerify with solid tines and aggressively verticut since this time, but the lack of sand applications has caused the fairways to become thatchy and soft. Excess thatch reduces playability and creates a moist environment that promotes an environment for disease development.

Just as the greens at NSCC were improved over the last 30 years by continual sand topdressing, we aspire to the same outcome on the fairways. We plan to apply roughly ¼ inch of sand per year on the fairways. At this rate, after ten years we will have accumulated a two inch sand base underneath the fairways allowing for improved turf health, better drainage, firmer fairways and improved golf cart accessibility following rain events.

In order to apply the desired amount of sand, the golf course maintenance staff has once again begun to apply sand to the fairways. We will make three applications in the spring and three applications in the fall. The first application on the White Nine will be completed by May 1st. The Red and Blue Nines will be treated immediately following or as soon as the weather permits.

,Even thought the sand is swept into the turf canopy, the fairways will be somewhat sandy for a couple days. As you play, you may notice that your ball picks up a small amount of sand. This will occur until the turf grows through sand. This inconvenience is small compared to the improved fairway conditions that will occur over the next couple of years.
Garrett Luckhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03797830358961028803noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6364115290697923549.post-27296291505288349742012-04-06T05:33:00.002-07:002012-04-06T05:49:59.416-07:00Golf Season Begins With Course In Great Shape

The 2012 golf season officially begins this weekend with the onset of the first major of the year, the Masters. The golf course at NSCC has opened in wonderful conditions. A mild winter, with little ice and minimal sub-zero temperatures, has provided us with a damage free golf course. Additionally, extremely warm temperatures for extended periods of time in March have provided for an early spring green up. Currently turf conditions are 4-6 weeks ahead of schedule. That being said, the golf course maintenance staff has been very busy preparing the course for play and summer:

Putting Greens: The greens have been verticut and topdressed. Growth regulators have been applied to reduce annual bluegrass seedhead production. Mowing heights and fertility will be manage to allow for adequate recovery and growth.

Tees: The tees have been verticut and topdressed as well. We will place the tee markers toward the front of tees for a couple more weeks in order to preserve the primary hitting areas for the upcoming season.

Fairways: The fairways have come out of winter in the best shape that I have ever seen--they currently appear as though it is mid-June. Our equipment technician Jim is currently solid-tine aerifying all fairways. He has completed the White Nine and is currently working on the Red Nine. Once Jim completes this process, the golf course maintenance staff will begin verticutting fairways in preparation for our first sand topdressing application.

Pump Station Improvements: The pumps in the pumping station on the White Nine have been completely rebuilt and installed. The irrigation system was pressurized yesterday. The golf course maintenance staff will repair all leaking pipes and sprinkler heads in the coming weeks.

Stump Hole Repair: The warm weather and dry conditions have allowed the golf course maintenance staff to get an early jump on repairing the stump holes created following the removal of trees in the fall of 2011. While most holes were leveled off and seeded, the golf course maintenance staff sodded the largest stump holes located close to the fairways on 1 White and 3 White.

Take advantage of the warm temperatures this weekend and come out and play the course. Follow your round by watching the Masters in the clubhouse!

Garrett Luckhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03797830358961028803noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6364115290697923549.post-61829637532037170192012-02-22T08:21:00.000-08:002012-02-22T08:34:15.915-08:00Irrigation System Maintenance and Improvements A properly functioning irrigation system is vital to maintaining quality turf conditions throughout the season. The irrigation system is truly the life blood of the golf course during the hot summer months. Without a reliable system, turfgrass decline would be inevitable.

Understanding this, the NSCC Board of Directors approved two major deferred maintenance projects which will guarantee proper irrigation function for years to come.

The Board approved the following maintenance work to the pump station on 7 White:

Restore the support frame that holds all four pumps above the wet well.

Restore the 60HP pump to peak efficiency

Rebuild and add an additional stage to the 20HP in order to meet the higher pressure demand that our system now operates at

Service the 30HP pump and motor

The Board also approved the following upgrades to the irrigation control system since our current control system is no longer manufactured and now obsolete. In fact, some electronic repair parts are no longer available for purchase:

Replace the 27 on-course Network 800 controllers with 15 new Lynx controllers

Replace the 12 year-old central computer with a new computer and software

While these projects do not necessarily have the appeal of a renovation project, they are critical to course conditioning. All installation and repair work is currently underway. The new system will be up and running to begin the season.
Garrett Luckhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03797830358961028803noreply@blogger.com0
